James Pitcher

Climate Change Manager, London Underground

James Pitcher is Climate Change Manager for London Underground (LU) and supports Transport for London in the delivery of effective Climate Change mitigation strategies for the Tube to meet its organisational objective of reducing its carbon footprint. He coordinates, optimises, and monitors the delivery of existing programmes under the organisations Carbon Emissions Reduction Plan and provides the focal point for the co-ordination and driving of improvement on climate change matters at the Tube.  He recently led LU to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard.

He was previously employed as Environmental Manager at Tate & Lyle Sugars Europe where he assisted with the company’s pioneering biomass boiler project and initiated a life cycle assessment exercise that measured the embodied carbon within cane sugar across the entire supply chain.  

He has supported both public and multi-national private organisations in the delivery of effective climate change mitigation strategies to meet organisational objectives of reducing operational and product carbon footprints.   Coordinating, optimising, and monitoring the delivery of carbon emissions reduction plans.

He provides a focal point for the co-ordination and driving of improvement on climate change matters within businesses, including planning and reporting.  In addition, James has personally produced two carbon assessment and management software tools that enable organisations to calculate their carbon footprint to GHG Protocol Standard, including Scope 3 emissions, predict both the financial effects and full climate change impact of completing a proposed project and also CRC obligations.

His professional experience to date has also included implementation of a worldwide Supply Chain and Life Cycle Assessment exercise for food products and is IEMA accredited to implement Environmental Management Systems to ISO 14001 standards (two systems established to date, one for the largest cane sugar refinery in the world). 

Additional experience includes the personal management for a £20 million renewable energy project, ensuring compliance with carbon trading schemes (EU-ETS), management of IPPC Permits and advising on a Fairtrade commitment to ensure the ethical and sustainable sourcing of raw sugar cane.  He is also a qualified Health and Safety professional to Institute of Safety and Health (IOSH) standard.
